The first-ever Volkswagen Transporter plug-in hybrid is now available to order.
The new van combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery. That produces 232PS of combined power via the CVT transmission, and, depending on the exact body style, a pure electric range of up to 35 miles.
The van, priced from £47,227 OTR, is also available in a number of wheelbases and trims including Kombi (which converters such as Bilbo’s have used in the past for their Celex HL) and Panel Van.
Volkswagen is known for producing some of the best vans for a camper conversion, including the Transport and the Crafter, but this is the first time the Transporter is being made available as a plug-in hybrid.
Ford has already produced a plug-in hybrid version of its Nugget, based on a Ford Transit Custom. This is no longer being sold in the UK, but anyone looking for a hybrid Ford campervan can still go for the Panama P10E, based on a Ford Tourneo Custom Active.
The Transporter could prove a popular choice for people who like the idea of a self-build campervan.
The release of the Transporter eHybrid follows on from the recent news from VW about the changes to its Crafter-based Grand California campervan, which is now available with a range of options to make it more appealing to fans of off-gridding.
