A time capsule containing details of what it is like to go camping in 2026 has been buried in the ground at one of the Camping and Caravanning Club’s sites as part of the club’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
The capsule, buried at the Clent Hills site near Halesowen in the West Midlands, contains mementos contributed by campers from across the UK during the club’s anniversary year.
The particular motorhome site was chosen because of its special significance to the club. Clent Hills was dedicated in 1937 as a memorial to Thomas Hiram Holding, the man who founded the club in 1901.
Club president Hamza Yassin buried the capsule with the help of the three winners of a competition run by the club to submit pledges for future campers. These were included in a commemorative book placed inside the capsule along with the mementos, a selection of club publications, camping memorabilia, a 2026 membership card, a staff uniform, and a copy of Two Shillings a Day, an illustrated book outlining a pioneering bikepacking journey Thomas Hiram Holding made as the club was being set up.
Hamza said, “What makes this time capsule so special is that it has been shaped by campers themselves, capturing not just what camping looks like in 2026, but the experiences of people enjoying it today. It’s exciting to think that one day future generations will open it and discover what mattered to campers in our time, from the equipment we used to the memories we made and the messages we wanted to leave behind.”
A commemorative plaque where the capsule has been buried, and a crab apple tree has also been planted to provide a lasting focal point while supporting pollinators and local wildlife.
