Five of the best campervan sites for city breaks

While campervanning gives us the freedom to explore some of the most beautiful sights in the UK, it also allows you to pitch up at a site near a more vibrant location, such as a bustling city.

In the same way that some will be ideal campervan sites for cyclists, each one of these five campsites will put you in the perfect place to explore a busy city, with options for exploring locations such as Cardiff, Edinburgh and Bath.

The capital city of Cardiff hosts an impressive range of civic buildings, with a fine museum, City Hall, the Law Courts and the University. Within a stone’s throw is the magnificent Cardiff Castle, which dates back to Norman times.

Cardiff Caravan & Camping Park, which is ideal for visiting the city, has a lovely rural feel – you camp in the peaceful parkland, while only being a short stroll away from Cardiff and its many great amenities.

Edinburgh is many things to many people. From its location below an extinct volcano, to its spectacular castle – the most visited attraction in the whole of Scotland – to the film, comedy, music and military festivals held during the year, to the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, there really is something to interest everyone.

Mortonhall Caravan & Camping Park lies within an 18th-century arboretum, accessible from Edinburgh City bypass and on a bus route into the city centre.

For a city break, there’s very little that can beat the fantastic remains and museum of the Roman spa and temple built over the hot springs of Aquae Sulis, now better known as Bath.

Nearby Bath Marina and Caravan Park is a popular site, where you can take advantage of the Park & Ride just across the road to get into the city. You can also catch a bus to Bristol from just outside the campsite.

Facilities include toilets, showers, a launderette and chemical disposal, and all of the pitches are hardstanding with 16A electric hook-up.

Increasingly popular as a holiday destination, Northern Ireland offers awesome scenery, wonderful cities and a vibrant cultural life.

Titanic Belfast is the big draw in the capital city of Belfast, but don’t miss City Hall, the fine cathedral and the historic SS Nomadic.

Dundonald Touring Caravan Park makes an ideal place to pitch if you are keen to enjoy Belfast’s highlights: it’s just five miles away, and buses depart from the main road right alongside.

You’ll have to travel into the suburbs of London to find this site, but it is well worth it, for the pretty location on the banks of the Thames.

Some pitches back on to the river, so you can watch the boats go by while you enjoy your morning tea.

For those heading into London, the train from nearby Weybridge station takes less than 50 minutes to reach Waterloo, from where you can easily get to the South Bank, with attractions such as The London Eye, the Royal Festival Hall and much, much more.
